Health Without Borders

This course inspired me to further my education in Medicine and Public Health.

The HWB course promotes FIU’s Global initiatives with a focus that enables you from university-wide departments and disciplines to meet on a common ground of shared interests in understanding and analyzing the global impact of changing environments, economies, technologies, and social and cultural perspectives on human health.

This course taught me to understand and explain global public health issues, crises and solutions using appropriate terminology, units and indices I can now apply a global perspective based  global health issues, crises and solutions. Integrate the awareness from HWB course to explore solutions to identified global health crises â€‹. Research and communicate global health topic(s) of affected populations to advocate for improvement of their health status.

One experience that stuck with me was the introduction to Dr. Raj Panjabi work; which inspired me to work in medicine. Dr. Panjabi is the  CEO and co-founder of Last Mile Health, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing healthcare to the most remote communities in the world.  The model he utilizes brings health care to the doorsteps of people who absolutely have no access to medical care.

Intercultural Communication

This course has enabled me to think with more collectively. As I organize multiple community service projects that impact multiple communities in the Miami area I am more conscious of cultural differences and how that can impact my delivery of information.

This class is about the unique relationship between communication and culture. More specifically, it is about what happens when people from different cultures come together to share ideas and information. Verbal and nonverbal communication patterns of different cultures will be compared to appreciate the differences and similarities.

Medical Terminology

I realized that there is a distrust between marginalized communities and health professionals and I felt that I can help my community. By better understanding  health, medicine, and medical terminology I can assist in educating my community and that can reduce misunderstandings, and false information.

This course provides the student with basic medical language skills including pronunciation, spelling, and definitions as a foundation for developing the degree of competency required to read and understand medical reports and communicate with physicians and other medical professionals.
