The MCN fellowship is a student-led cohort whose purpose is to promote civic engagement and facilitate their initiative to solve a social issue they are passionate about or have a personal connection to. This program provides leadership training, a global network of changemakers, and I was allowed to lead Florida International University's 2021 cohort.
The initiative that I started is called Face 2 Face which provides a platform for marginalized communities at Florida International University and the Miami area. I have created the Face 2 Face initiative to bring awareness to social issues that plague these communities while trying to create immediate change. I have partnered with the Panther Community Action Board this semester to bring about awareness on Food Insecurity in the Miami area to combat food insecurity here FIU campus. Another initiative I am doing working with the PCA Board is to bring awareness about gentrification and homelessness in the Miami area to the student body, faculty, and staff at FIU. The last part face-to-face for this semester is to partner with the Panther Community Action Board again and discuss gentrification in the Over-town community. We will be using social media to bring awareness to what gentrification looks like in Miami area communities and how they are affected.
This semester, I have met with Dr. Bejar and other administrations to discuss the student body's grievances with the school. We have had two roundtables where we discussed the proper representation of black students in student-run organizations. Another topic we brought up was the monitoring and maintenance of disabled door access buttons on campus. Another discussed topic is good organizing networking opportunities that bring more job opportunities to our international students. I also plan to continue meeting with representatives here at FIU to discuss creating and fostering a healthy environment for their black students and alumni, trying to discover new ways to promote inclusivity into student organizations.
