Global learning reflection

Global Perspective, Global Awareness, Global Engagement

In my overall experience being part of the global medallion program, I utilized opportunities to educate myself on social and cultural backgrounds. I was challenged to put myself in the shoes of marginalized groups in Miami, in the United States, & across the globe. I was tasked with creating change in communities, and in doing so, I recognized my privilege & learned empathy.

This program taught me how social issues (local & global) are interconnected. Finding solutions to these social issues is not straightforward due to overlapping social issues.

One of the most important lessons I learned was analyzing how I help, and the good intentions I have can impact a community both negatively and positively. I gained multiple mentors that assisted me with my initiatives. I was able to run various service projects for my campus successfully. I eloquently expressed student grievances and provided solutions to administrators; administrators are now addressing them.

Leading these initiatives fostered growth in my communication, facilitating, and leadership skills.

I will take this experience moving forward as it has inspired me to further my medicine and public health education. Moving forward, I plan to partner with community clinics and health intervention teams to reduce distrust between POC and health professionals and reduce health disparities in these communities.
